Curious about the job market in Australia?
Covid-19: What you need to know about the Australian job market
Affected visas: 482, 186, 494
The Covid-19 crisis has affected many businesses and increased unemployment for Australians.
As a result, anyone wanting to migrate to Australia should expect the government will pressure employers to employ Australians first – before sponsoring or nominating foreign workers.
Which occupations can still enter Australia?
When applying for your visa, you must have evidence of advertising positions, including jobs listed on the Australian Government website
Occupation lists are expected to change.
We expect disruptions to many businesses with ability to sponsor overseas workers, unless the businesses are in critical sectors.
Sponsorship, Nomination and Visa applications are expensive to employers. So you must carefully appraise your chance of success before applying.
If you are refused a visa, you have appeal rights with the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).
Areas likely to be in high demand
Expect the growth of workers in essential services and sectors that have been in high demand during the pandemic – like network infrastructure, healthcare, and delivery services.
Because of the prominent role of the healthcare professionals during the pandemic, we can expect people looking at a new career option to consider this as a path forward.
Also, because some s
kills will have fallen away during the post Covid-19 recession, there will be urgent demand for skills that cannot be generated through short courses.
There has been a continuous increase of jobs in some regional areas since June 2020.
Most of these jobs are in the agriculture, food processing, logistics, construction, healthcare and aged care industries.
Some fall into the 'essential services' category.
Some of these jobs require entry-level skills, such as the ability to drive a forklift in a regional factory or warehouse.
How do I know which visa is right for my work skills?
482 and 186 visas are restricted to less occupations and most require skills assessments.
The 494 visa is open to lots of occupations but is limited to regional areas.
